What is Beltane and how do we celebrate it in 2025?
Beltane 2025 will be celebrated on Thursday, May 1, 2025, marking the beginning of summer and celebrating the fertility, growth and renewal of Nature. The festival has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions and is traditionally known as Bealtaine, being one of the four great seasonal festivals of the Gaels.

Today, Beltane is celebrated by Pagan, Wiccan communities, and witchcraft practitioners around the world, through rituals such as Maypole dancing, lighting bonfires, and making offerings to deities.
What is Beltane?
Beltane, or Bealtaine is the Celtic festival that marks the beginning of summer and the optimal time to drive cattle to the summer pastures, accompanied by rituals of protection and fertility. The name comes from Gaelic and can be roughly translated as “bright fire” or “living fire”. In the past, Beltane bonfires were lit on hills and ritual jumping around them was customary to bring good luck and increase in crops.
Beltaine, also known by its ancient forms as Beltane , Belltaine or Cétshamain , represents one of the most important holidays of the Celtic calendar, marking the transition from spring to summer and being celebrated on May 1. Its name derives, according to linguistic research, from the proto-Celtic belo-te(p)niâ , meaning "bright fire", a clear allusion to the ritual fires that dominated this celebration. Efforts to explain the holiday etymologically have also generated alternative interpretations, such as the "fire of Bel" - a supposed solar or healing deity, possibly identified with Belenos or even associated, in a medieval syncretism, with the biblical god Baal.
This celebration, common in the Irish, Scottish and Manx space, was deeply linked to the cyclical nature and the pastoral economy. In a world where transhumance was the rule, the beginning of summer marked a crucial moment: the animals were led to the mountain pastures, and the fertility of Nature and the protection of the community had to be ensured through sacred rites. The Beltane fires – lit ritually, without metal, by rubbing wood – had a purifying and protective role. In Irish and Scottish traditions, cattle were driven between two fires to be protected from disease and evil influences.
Irish toponymy preserves the memory of this celebration in numerous places called Beltany or Lios Bealtaine, while oral traditions and folklore reflect a time when communities gathered at sacred heights such as Uisneach to honour the divine with fire, music and food. Archaeological finds support the existence of ritual fires and animal sacrifices at these centres.
Essential elements of the celebration include not only fire, but also the decoration of homes and animals with yellow flowers – symbols of light and the sun. In Ireland, the May Bush , a tree decorated with ribbons, shells and painted eggs, was the center of the festivities. This custom, associated with the spirits of nature ( Aos Sí ), was intended to attract the blessings of invisible forces. In a mixture of magic and pragmatism, people offered symbolic food to these spirits – through ritualistic gestures of sacrifice, such as roasting the Beltane bannock and offering pieces of it to foxes, vultures and other "threats" of the flocks.
Beltane reflects a worldview in which the sacredness of nature and the close connection between humans and the environment are central. It is a celebration of light overcoming darkness, of fertility and the harmony between the seen and the unseen. Although in modern times many of these practices have been marginalized or reinterpreted, contemporary festivals such as the one in Edinburgh revive the ancestral spirit of this holiday – with bonfires, dances, masks and offerings, in an attempt to spiritually reconnect with the earth and primordial forces.
Beltane is not just a celebration of the past, but a living symbol of man's connection to cosmic rhythms and an expression of the desire for regeneration, light and protection in an ever-changing world.
