Discover the Magic of Yule with the Special Statuette of the Goddess Gaya

As we celebrate Yule, a time of joy, renewal, and rebirth, there is no more fitting time to honor the eternal cycle of life.

Yule marks the birth of the God from the Goddess, bringing light into the darkest time of the year. Yule comes from the Old Norse jól and the Old English géohol, which was a hunting season after the harvest was finished. It fell in what we now call December, so it eventually became associated with the Christmas holiday. The first recorded mention of the noun "Yuletide," according to Wikipedia, was in 1475. The Yuletide season lasted from late November to the first few weeks of January, but the Yule holiday lasted three days, during the winter solstice, and marked the beginning of the new year.

Yule was similar to Passover in Jerusalem before the Temple was destroyed. For Passover, the Jewish people would sacrifice lambs, birds, and other animals. The blood was offered on the altar, and the meat was cooked for the Passover meal. According to historian and Norse saga translator Lee M. Hollander, every nine years, Germanic (Norse) farmers were required to come to the temple (hof) and make sacrifices and feast for a prescribed period of time during Yuletide. Yule was celebrated in the Germanic lands with animal sacrifices, and the sanctified blood was used to paint the altar, the temple pillars, and the supplicant himself as part of the ritual. He was literally "washed in blood." This was followed by festivities, storytelling, and drinking around a large communal fire. In Grettis Saga, Yule is described as a time of "greatest mirth and joy among men."

This was also a time for taking oaths. Business and marriages were concluded. The gøði (priest, judge, chief) who was in charge of the hof wore a large gold ring around his neck. The people taking the oath would place their hands on this ring and swear their oath in front of witnesses. Such a ring was found during the excavation of an 11th-century chieftain's residence on the outskirts of Tissø, Denmark.

The most famous hof was discovered in Uppsala, Sweden. The same temple is mentioned in the Heimskringla, by Snorri Sturluson, and in the 11th-century travelogue of Adam of Bremen. It is described as housing three statues on three thrones, one for Thor, one for Wodan (Odin), and one for Fricco (Freyr). There is a large golden chain around the building, hanging from the ridge of the roof and shining in the sunlight from afar. Other traveler accounts also mention this chain. In Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga Saga, Uppsala was the place where King Domalde was sacrificed in the autumn after three years of famine, for the benefit of his people, and prosperity returned. The first day of Yule falls on the last day of autumn.

In the Saga of Hákon the Good, Haakon I of Norway changed the date of Yule from the days surrounding the winter solstice to the date when Christmas was celebrated in the rest of Europe. Although the sacrifices and religious practices of Yule were abandoned, many Yuletide customs continued. And what better way to celebrate this divine connection than by bringing into our homes a statuette that represents beauty and life itself?
