Hecate was the Greek goddess of crossroads, mist and magic. Most of the time she is depicted with three heads; one of a dog, one of a snake and one of a horse. She is usually accompanied by two dog ghosts, who are said to serve her. Hecate is wrongly perceived as the goddess of witchcraft and evil, but she actually did some very good things. One such deed is the rescue of Persephone , (daughter of Demeter , queen of the underworld and maiden of spring) from the underworld. Hecate, it is said, haunts a crossroads with three roads, each at the ends facing a certain direction. It is also said to appear when the ivory moon shines.
